This is an ancient British tradition later adopted by African Americans, that symbolizes sweeping out the old and preparing for the new as together the couple jump over the broomstick. It provides a wonderful photo opportunity and is a lovely way of having a short, ancient tradition in modern ceremonies. It is also a way of asking for the union to be blessed, as the broomstick is symbolic of fertility!
